Doolittle Raiders
On April 18, 1942, from a position at sea 668 miles from Tokyo, the carrier
USS Hornet launched 16 B-25’s of the 17th AAF Air Group led by
Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle, USA, for the first attack on the
Japanese homeland. USS Hornet sortied from Alameda on the 2nd of April
and made a rendezvous with the carrier USS Enterprise and other ships of
Task Force 16 (V.Adm. W.F. Halsey Commanding) North of the Hawaiian Islands,
and proceeded across the Pacific to the launching point without making port.
