Helmut joined the Lufwaffe in April 1940 and was posted to "Geschwader Horst Wessel" of ZG26 to fly twin engine Bf110 with Rommel's Afrika Korps. By wars end Helmut had flown 33 different types of aircraft. This included the first jets (ME-262). Helmut walked away from five crashes, bailed out of one burning aircraft, after losing a fight with a B-17, fought in the North African desert war under Rommel. Was awarded the Iron Cross, and came through WWII without ever suffering a scratch. ~Helmut Zittier passed away January 10, 2004~
