Helmut Zittier joined the Lufwaffe in April 1940 and was posted to "Geschwaqader Horst Wessel" of ZG 26 to fly twin engine ME-110 with Rommel's Afrika Korps. By wars end Helmut had flown 33 different types of aircraft. This included the first jets (Me-262). Helmut walked away from five crashes, bailed out of one burning aircraft, after losing a fight with a B-17, fought in the north African desert war under Rommel, was awarded the Iron Cross, and came through WWII without ever suffering a scratch.
