The top scoring ace of the 325th FG, "Herky" Green began his combat career by taking off in his P-40 from the deck of the USS Ranger on 19 January 1943, arriving in North Africa ready for combat soon afterwards. He subsequently flew the P-47, before the 325th converted to the P-51. Green stayed with the 325th for two-and-a-half years as pilot, squadron ops officer and CO. In 100 combat missions he downed 18 enemy aircraft (including three in P-40s and 10 in P-47s) and destroyed ten more on the ground. He also has the distinction of shooting down 6 enemy aircraft on one mission. His assigned aircraft were always coded "11". Col.Herschel Green passed away August 16, 2006.
